Seven practical checks

Start with what you can observe and write down.

Walk through each item with the person who knows that part of your business. Keep notes about what is in place, what needs attention, and who owns the next step.

  1. Inventory what matters

List critical devices, cloud tools, sensitive data, and the people responsible for each.

  2. Lock down accounts

Enable multifactor authentication where available, use unique passwords stored in a password manager, remove inactive accounts, and limit administrator access.

  3. Keep software current

Apply operating-system, application, router, and other network-device updates. Identify unsupported software for replacement or a documented plan.

  4. Back up and practice recovery

Back up important data, restrict access to backups, and periodically test restoring a representative file or system.

  5. Build safer email habits

Teach staff to pause on unexpected links, attachments, payment requests, and credential requests, and provide a clear reporting path.

  6. Review devices, Wi-Fi, and remote access

Change default credentials, use secure Wi-Fi settings, limit remote administration, and confirm device protections and updates are enabled.

  7. Write down an incident response starting point

Record who to contact, how to isolate an affected device, where records are kept, and which insurer, legal, regulatory, or vendor contacts may matter to the business.

This checklist is a starting point. Priorities depend on your business’s systems, data, staff, and obligations.
